1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Encouraging Early Reading Skills

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a new Library program that encourages parents and caregivers to read at least 1,000 books with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Learning to read begins long before a child starts school. Reading to them for just 15 minutes a day is the best way to prepare them and help them build vocabulary, word recognition and language skills.

Who can participate?

Preschool-age children (ages 0-5) with their parent or caregiver.

How do I get started?

  1. Come to the library and pick up a free 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten kit and start reading. Kit includes 1KBK reading log, a list of recommended books, information for parents on early literacy, library activity calendar and resources available at the library.
  2.  Track your reading on your log sheet. Fill in a bubble for each book you read to/with your child.
  3. Each time you reach a milestone with your reading (200, 400, 600, or 800) bring your reading log into the library and collect a prize. Reach the 1,000 books level and your child will receive a free book and book bag of their very own.

How can we read 1,000 books?

Reading is fun and rewarding. You'll read 1,000 books before you know it! The average picture books takes just 5 minutes to read.

Reading 3 books per day for 1 year equals 1095 books!
Reading 1 book per day for 3 years equals 1095 books!
Reading 10 books per week for 2 years equals 1040 books!

Reading the same book over and over counts each time you read the book. And don't forget to count eBooks and books that were read at story time! Even if you don't get to finish the book because of interruptions or short attention spans, count those, too!

Most of all, use your reading time as a special time..and have fun!!!
