Summer Scribes Young Writers and Adult Writers Contests

The Arts and Humanities Commission is proud to announce the Summer Scribes Writers’ Contests for both youth and adult writers. Its purpose is to encourage and reward excellence in written communication skills. Entries are judged on originality, content, creativity, relevancy, structure and the intangible: how the work touches the reader. 

  •  The Young Writers’ Contest is open to all students (Grades 1-12) who are summer residents of the Lake Ray Hubbard area.
  • The Adult Writers’ Contest is open to summer residents of the Lake Ray Hubbard area 18 years and older.

The theme for this contest is: INSPIRED BY HISTORY
Categories include:

  • Short Story
  • Short Work (to include plays and essays)
  • Poetry

One entry allowed per participant per category.  All works will be presented anonymously for judging.

First place winners in each category will receive an award certificate from the Arts & Humanities Commission, be recognized on the Arts & Humanities Facebook page, and receive a cash prize. Second and Third place winners in each category will receive an award certificate from the Arts & Humanities Commission and be recognized on the Arts & Humanities Facebook page.

 First Place awards:

  • Division K-5 awarded $25 in each category
  • Division 6-12 awarded $50 in each category
  • Division Adult awarded $100 in each category

Deadline for entries is Friday, July 20, 2018. Entries may be mailed or delivered to the Rowlett Public Library (attention Arts and Humanities Commission). The Library is located at 3900 Main Street, Suite 200, Rowlett, TX 75088.
