Food Inspection Scores - What Do They Mean?

Food establishments are inspected either once or twice per year depending on the processes they use. Establishments could possibly receive up to four inspections if they continue to score a below average or failing score. Food scores are posted at a minimum of twice per year, typically at mid-point and endpoint, but may be posted more frequently.

Scoring for food inspections is based upon 100 weighted points assigned to different categories that summarize all of the health and sanitation regulations from food protection to physical conditions of areas such as walls, floors and plumbing. Critical violations, those that require immediate corrective action due to food contamination, illness and/or injury, are assigned a higher weighted point value (3 points) than non-critical violations (1-2 points). An establishment may receive a passing score but could still be closed due to an abundance of critical violations.

It is important to note that when looking at the overall score of a food establishment, one must consider all of the processes carried out at the facility. For instance, a convenience store with only pre-packaged food items does not involve the same processes as a full service restaurant.

In addition, a routine food service inspection is only a "snap-shot" of the day. At any given time a food establishment may have more or fewer violations than noted at the time of inspection. A food service inspection may not reflect the overall, long-term cleanliness of an establishment. An important fact to note is that many violations noted on inspection are corrected on-site prior to the inspector leaving.
