A little Rowlett history as we observe Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19…Jane Johnson was born into slavery at Jefferson, Texas in 1850. She moved to Rowlett with her husband, Moses around 1865. They had eleven children, all of whom grew up in their modest home in the (then) Chiesa community, where they worked as sharecroppers. Jane never did learn to read or write, but they were ultimately quite successful and eventually acquired their own one-hundred-acre farm. The farm was reported to be worth $151 per acre in 1882. That would place their net worth at somewhere close to three million dollars by today’s standards!
Moses died sometime around 1885 and left Jane to manage their flourishing farm. Cotton was king in those days and Jane was one of the best cotton growers to be found anywhere around Rowlett. READ ON...

National Mosquito Awareness Week is June 20-26In recognition, the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) has tips to help you avoid the bites from these vicious blood-suckers. Standing water, bare skin and dark clothing are three things that attract mosquitoes. AMCA recommends people follow the three D’s to keep mosquitoes away: - Drain: Empty out water containers at least once per week. Common areas of standing water include empty trash cans or buckets, tires, clogged rain gutters, animal watering dished, and flowerpots.
- Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Sport material clothing is more light weight and can provide coverage without making you too hot during the Texas heat.
- Defend: Properly apply an EPA-registered repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR 3535 or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. Remember to follow product label instructions.
Drop these Dunks into standing water around your home and do your part to control them.
2 FREE dunks are available (while supplies last) to Rowlett residents, just show a current utility bill or your ID at the Community Development offices, 5702 Rowlett Rd., Monday - Friday, 8a - 5pm.
